Today we introduced TI-RTOS 2.12, our software platform for faster development of Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Battery life will be a key differentiator for many IoT applications, therefore TI-RTOS’s state-of-the-art power management software enables developers to fully leverage the ultra-low power capabilities of TI’s new ARM® Cortex® M4F-based MSP432 LaunchPad and SimpleLink™ ultra-low- power wireless microcontrollers (MCUs)– without any programming effort. TI-RTOS is also fully integrated with the wireless connectivity options provided by SimpleLink wireless MCUs, enabling you to easily connect your IoT node to the cloud.
Previous power management solutions for MCUs have simply been sets of libraries that implemented different power-down modes. This left time-pressed developers having to work out, when and how, to use them and often failing to get the best possible energy efficiency. This approach also complicates application development. In the TI-RTOS approach, the multitasking kernel, device drivers and power manager cooperate to automatically put the device into the lowest appropriate power mode when the CPU has no work to do. These power smarts come right out-of-the-box. A developer can, of course, tweak them if desired, but doesn’t have to do anything to get the benefits of ultra-low power.
Another great ease-of-use option supported by TI-RTOS is Energia Multitasking (MT). Energia is based on the Wiring framework, popularized by Arduino, and is a great rapid prototyping tool for embedded applications. Energia MT brings the benefits of multitasking to Energia sketches. Each sketch is automatically mapped to its own task, which can then run in parallel with other tasks. This makes implementing something like multiple LEDs blinking at different rates much simpler.
Check out the below chart to see what features and benefits TI-RTOS 2.12 has to offer:
