DIY with TI project brings a nautical chart to life

Michael Zwerg is the design team lead on the TI MSP430. So it comes as no surprise that when this DIYer created an animated nautical chart with lights, an MSP430 fully controlled the chart.

“This nautical chart has all the light information about the different lighthouses and channel markers. There is a light sensor on the top and an MSP430 controlling everything. If it is getting dark in the evening, the chart will light up and show you all of the nice information that you would usually find on a nautical map,” said Michael.

Michael said nautical charts are used in coastal regions to show depths of water, heights of land, natural features, details of the coastline, navigational hazards and navigation aids like buoys and lighthouses. Michael enjoys sailing and thought this would be an illuminating and dynamic way to show lighthouses and other features on a framed picture.
