TI creates an ‘inspiring’ microcontroller for real-time performance

Every day, we require our electronics to handle more data and do it faster than the day before, expecting data to be processed in an instant. The demand is high, and TI’s new, innovative C2000™ Delfino™ F2837xD microcontrollers (MCUs) meet that demand in a way unlike any other MCU before. Performance? Quadrupling the processing power TI has previously provided. Applications? Industrial automation, automotive radar and solar power, just to name a few. Cost savings? Absolutely.

The 32-bit dual-core C2000™ Delfino™ F2837xD MCUs not only set a new standard in MCU horsepower, they also offer the latest in integrated analog technology on-chip, taking high-end MCUs to a completely new level. With the highest MCU performance in the industry and high precision analog peripherals, these devices allow customers to create low-latency systems for demanding control applications. Simply put, everything falls under one unique architecture that builds on the success of C2000’s past while meeting the latest customer demands for the future. Keith Ogboenyiya, C2000 general manager, calls it a ‘fundamental leap’ ahead of what exists today.

“It took some of the brightest minds within our team to really rethink how we handle system partitioning, performance and complete integration of a system,” said Keith.

Keith also said this series of C2000 Delfino MCUs improves upon existing digital power and industrial applications like high-end servo drives operating in control-based systems and solar inverters used to convert energy from solar panels to the power grid, while also playing into a whole new set of industries. For example, this dual-core series of C2000 Delfino MCUs can support factory system automation in emerging economies where companies want to offset the increasing cost of labor. These MCU’s can enable systems within a factory to work in synchronization, provide diagnostic information if a system goes down and offers the ability to communicate among the latest machine-to-machine and connectivity solutions.

Some of the hottest new technologies in cars today involve radar. Collision avoidance, lane departure warning and park assist require very high speed digital signal processing. All of the data must be converted with high precision and process multiple computations executed in real-time. System accuracy is maximized by including more technology on one MCU with the Delfino F2837xD MCU series, leading to safer roads for us all.

Solar panels continue to make great strides in being an alternative energy source, but the industry still has a long way to go. Many of the issues come from digital power conversion efficiency when translating the energy from the solar panels to the grid. New developments in solar power allow customers to create flexible system designs by gathering data from multiple areas of the solar panel through various feedback channels that have previously been too costly to take to market.  By integrating the necessary interfaces, peripherals, and many of the analog system components on chip, the new Delfino F2837xD MCUs will allow cost effective systems to be deployed, increasing the use of sustainable solar energy.

What does this mean to customers when it comes to cost? To match what this series of MCUs offers, many real-time systems today need multiple processors and other integrated circuits (ICs), plus a variety of analog components, often times on separate boards. On top of all of that, companies would have to use different MCUs for different levels of performance. Now customers can use the same board for mid to high-end industrial systems by using the same C2000 MCU architecture, with embedded processing and analog peripherals in the same place. This saves engineering time as systems are scalable across the C2000 platform and will be compatible with future single-core variants of this new Delfino series. The end result: Companies who use the new C2000 Delfino F2837xD MCU series will save money.

Performance? Applications? Cost savings? With best in class performance, a wide array of applications and incredible cost savings, it’s no wonder Keith is so excited about this ‘fundamental leap.’

“We continue to encourage our engineers to innovate. When we innovate and differentiate, I feel a sense of pride, because it is amazing to see what these engineers are able to do and the technology that we can create. It’s inspiring,” said Keith.
