The TI University Program is announcing "Embedded Systems - Shape the World, UT 6.01x" brought to you by The University of Texas at Austin and MOOC Provider EdX-- the very first TI-hardware based MOOC
It's known, that "students learn by doing” - but online, this task is difficult. That is why Professors Valvano and and Yerriballi choose UT's EE 319K lab-based course (a required course taken by all ECE majors) into an intense lab-oriented MOOC. What makes this particular MOOC stand out is how they have designed the lab into the course, to give the hands on-learning component that is experienced by UT Austin students in EE 319K. How are they doing a Massively Online Open Course-Lab?
By having the students create the lab at home!
In this hands-on experience, students will build their own arcade-style game using TI’s TM4C123 Tiva™ LaunchPad Microcontroller. This microcontroller has a state of the art ARM® Cortex™-M4 processor. About this "Embedded Systems - Shape the World" MOOC:
This course, is a 15-week course based on Dr. Jonathan Valvano’s textbook Introduction to Embedded Systems Volume I.
The course begins with embedded programming through introducing Assembly and C Programming language and continues in a bottoms up approach (simple to complex) to build microcontroller systems. Students start with a simple blink LED introduction and end the semester building their own video game.
To create the lab experience at home, the cost had to be as low as possible, but still deliver an effective experience.
So, professors Valvano and Yerribelli selected a low-cost <$20 USD board and an assembled a package of components that are both commonly found in most electronics stores, but can also be re-used as the student’s electronics education continues.

The kit features TI's Tiva LaunchPad Evaluation Kit, the low-cost, ARM Cortex-M4 board and paired it with some basic components are used to teach inputs, outputs, indicators, displays and interfaces. All of the components were chosen to be easily accessible for students across the world and to keep cost down to try and enable every student that signed up to be able to afford the hardware.
